When an AI startup signs its first few enterprise customers, the product usually needs some help to work in their world. Their data is messier than the demo data, their systems are older, and their security team has questions. Increasingly, the person who handles all of that is a forward deployed engineer.
Our US team has been helping AI startups hire FDEs since mid 2025. Here's what we've learned about the role, what it pays and how to hire well for it.
What a forward deployed engineer does
A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works alongside your customers, getting the product live in their environment and shaping it around how they actually work. Palantir built the model, and AI companies selling into enterprises have taken it up widely.
In practice, an FDE might spend a morning connecting your product to a customer's data warehouse, an afternoon building a workflow only that customer needs, and the end of the day telling your product team which requests are likely to come up again. It's real engineering work, just done much closer to the customer than most engineers sit.
Forward deployed engineer vs software engineer
Both write production code. The main difference is who they're building for.
| Forward deployed engineer | Software engineer | |
|---|---|---|
| Builds for | A handful of specific customers | Every customer, through the core product |
| Works most with | Customers and account executives | The product and engineering team |
| Success looks like | Customers live and using the product | A reliable product shipped on time |
The skills overlap a lot, and plenty of good FDEs started out as backend or full stack engineers. What tends to set them apart is that they enjoy the customer conversation as much as the code.
When an AI startup needs its first forward deployed engineer
There's no fixed point, but most of the startups we work with start thinking about it once deals get bigger and customers take longer to go live. Often the founders notice first, because they've quietly become the people doing every deployment themselves.
If your engineers are spending more time on individual customer setups than on the product, that's usually a good sign. Plenty of teams make that first hire a founding level role, and we've written more about hiring founding engineers if that's where you're heading.
Forward deployed engineer skills to look for
The FDEs we see do well tend to be strong product or backend engineers first. That usually means Python or TypeScript, solid API and integration experience, and enough cloud knowledge to deploy somewhere that isn't your own infrastructure. For AI startups, experience building with LLMs in production helps a lot, particularly knowing how to test what a model produces.
The other half is harder to put on a CV. Good FDEs are happy explaining trade offs to people who aren't technical, can turn a loose customer request into something buildable, and stay level headed when a deployment goes wrong in front of a client. Startup experience is a real plus, since early FDEs often end up writing the playbook as they go.
Forward deployed engineer salary in the US
In the US, base salaries for a forward deployed engineer currently sit between $130k and $230k, depending mostly on location. These bands come from our US software engineering salary guide, which we build from our own searches.
| Role | East Coast | West Coast | Remote US |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forward Deployed Engineer | $150k to $200k | $170k to $230k | $130k to $170k |
| Senior Forward Deployed Engineer | $170k to $210k | $195k to $240k | $145k to $180k |
| Staff Forward Deployed Engineer | $220k to $250k | $250k to $285k | $190k to $215k |
| Principal Forward Deployed Engineer | $235k to $275k | $265k to $315k | $200k to $235k |
| Forward Deployed Engineering Manager | $225k to $275k | $255k to $315k | $190k to $235k |
| Director of Forward Deployed Engineering | $250k to $300k | $285k to $345k | $215k to $260k |
Equity sits on top of these figures, and at venture backed startups it's often the bigger part of the conversation. If you're hiring for an AI native company, our agentic AI salary guide goes into more detail.
How to interview a forward deployed engineer
The FDE processes we see work best usually include a practical build, a conversation about working with customers, and time with the people the hire would sit between. A realistic integration task tends to tell you more than an algorithm test, and a short role play around a deployment that's gone wrong shows a lot about how someone communicates under pressure.
These questions tend to open up good conversations.
- Tell us about a deployment that went badly and what you'd do differently.
- How do you decide what to build for one customer and what to hand back to the product team?
- What's the hardest thing you've had to explain to a non technical buyer?
It's worth keeping the process fairly tight, as strong FDEs are usually talking to several companies at once.
Hiring forward deployed engineers with Trust in SODA
Since mid 2025, our US team has supported a range of AI startups on their forward deployed engineer hiring, and in that time we've seen one pattern again and again. FDEs are rarely hired one at a time. Most briefs we work on are for several at once, sometimes a whole team, so it helps to plan the search as a pipeline rather than a single hire. Those searches are also where the salary bands above come from.
If you're thinking about your first FDE hire, or growing a team that's already in place, we'd be happy to talk it through.
Forward deployed engineer FAQs
What does FDE stand for?
FDE stands for forward deployed engineer, a software engineer who works directly with customers to deploy and adapt a product inside their environment.
How much does a forward deployed engineer earn in the US?
Base salaries for a forward deployed engineer run from $130k for remote roles up to $230k on the West Coast, according to our September 2026 US salary guide. Senior, staff and leadership roles pay considerably more, and equity is usually on top.
What's the difference between a forward deployed engineer and a solutions engineer?
A solutions engineer mainly supports the sale with demos and technical scoping. A forward deployed engineer usually takes over after the deal and writes production code to get the customer live.
Do forward deployed engineers travel?
Often, yes. Many spend time on site with customers, especially in enterprise deals. It's worth being upfront about travel in the job description.
Should a startup's first FDE be a founding engineer?
For many early AI startups it makes sense. Your first FDE shapes how every future customer is onboarded, so it's worth hiring at a level that can set that process up.
